5 Reasons to Spend the Holidays in Formentera over the Other Balearic Islands

For British and Spanish travelers, the Balearics have long been their holiday favorite destinations. The guaranteed sunshine, glorious beaches and crystal clear waters offers them a promising holiday escapade. The fourth island of Balearic, which is the Formentera, is often neglected or unknown while the other three largest Islands of Majorca, Menorca and Ibiza are the most popular.
Formentera is the hidden paradise of the Balearics and although it sounds clich©d, the island is truly the Mediterraneans best kept secret. If you have never heard about Formentera, you should know the five reasons why you should take it a look before you book your next summer holiday to Majorca or one of the other Balearic Islands.
Peace and Quiet:
Among all the islands in the Balearics, Formentera is the smallest and the most secluded. The other islands have fully mature tourism markets with regular cheap flights to and from Britain and mainland Spain, but Formentera is only accessible by boat. You will have to fly to Ibiza and then take a 40 minute ferry across to the island. One good bonus of Formentera is it is quieter than its sister islands in Balearic and it is much less crowded in beaches and restaurants, offering a pleasant and tranquil holiday.
Authentic Balearic Experience
Formentera remains a truly Spanish destination unlike some of the more popular islands because it remains unspoiled by the demand for British cuisine, pubs and culture. Though the magic has been lost slightly in the overcrowded and over-commercialized spots in Ibiza and Majorca, the exquisite local seafood dishes and beach markets never fail to provide much more authentic Balearic magic.
Perfect for Family Holidays
To enjoy with the family, you can find some top cheap holidays in Majorca but Formentera offers that little something extra which you wont find on the other islands. Though the island is considerably smaller than the other Balearics, there is a closer tight-knit feel to the island atmosphere thats often absent in the club-lands of Ibiza or even Menorca. Kids are safe to wander the bazaars at night without concern from parents because crime is virtually non-existent in Formentera. Formentera is extremely family friendly and a wonderful place to take children from the summer holidays.
Jelly Free
One of the downsides of the beautiful Balearic beaches is that they are an ideal breeding ground for jellyfish. The problem was so prolific in Ibiza that fishermen were paid ¬600 a kilo for dragging jellyfish out of the waters. Fortunately this is not the case in Formentera, which is totally jelly free. Swimmers and sunbathers can enjoy the beaches with no fear of being stung by a jellyfish.
Naturism
Part of Formenteras culture for many years is naturism and those who prefer to enjoy the beaches in their birthday suit can do so at a number of Formenteras secluded spots. There are designated family areas where clothing is required along the coasts, but many areas are relaxed about naturalism and allow people to be free to enjoy themselves as nature intended.
