Lanzarote – What Are You missing?

Of all the hotspots around Europe, the Canary Islands are probably the most reliable for year round good weather. This is thanks to their location off the coast of Morocco, making them the most southerly port of call in the whole Eurozone, but the island that stands out from most is Lanzarote.

The seven islands that make up the Canaries are segregated into two main areas. The western Canaries – which revolve around the main island of Tenerife and which also include El Hierro, La Gomera and La Palma.

And of course the eastern Canaries – which are governed from Gran Canaria and which also encompasses Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Flights to Lanzarote

Over the last decade more and more independent travellers have started to visit Lanzarote, a result of the growth of the internet and the trend to browse and book holidays online.

This trend has increased interest in self catering accommodation such as Lanzarote villas and apartments – at the expense of package holiday deals and hotels. With holiday villas in Puerto del Carmen – the islands largest resort proving very popular with tourists from the UK and Eire. Getting to Lanzarote couldn’t be simpler as cheap flights to Lanzarote are available from virtually very airport across the UK. Water sports are an integral part of the islands activity break offering. The conditions for diving in Lanzarote are absolutely ideal – as the waters around the island offer great visibility as well a huge selection of exotic sea life.

And the island is also very popular with surfers from across Europe as the beaches and bays on the wilder and more rugged northern coastline offer ideal conditions for riders.

Lanzarote´s major sporting event is the Iron Man contest – which is held every May and which is widely regarded as one of the toughest triathlons in the world. And rightly so – as competitors are asked to complete a gruelling course comprising a 3km swim, 180km bike ride and then a full marathon in temperatures that are often in the 30´s. With 60 out of the 1000 strong field winning a coveted slot in the Iron Man grand final which takes place every year in Hawaii.Fortunately car hire is cheap so you can be far more relaxed! Accommodation does get booked up especially in the high season as returning visitors often have there favourite villas and apartments so its not unusual to see the best examples snapped up early in the season but fortunately with the depth of quality of villas available even if you don’t get your first choice you will seldom if ever be disappointed.

The island is home to three main resorts. As well as the emerging marina of Puerto Calero – where visitors will find two upmarket hotels and an abundance of expensive yachts and craft from around the world. Playa Blanca is a hot destination in recent years and holiday villas in Playa Blanca have become very popular with tourists over the last few years, as they offer decent value for money. And are the best choice during the winter months when the climate here is more favourable than elsewhere on the island.

Puerto del Carmen is as popular as ever if your planning to visit as it offers sun.sea and plenty of sand. But one of the most enjoyable aspects of a holiday is of course not having to do the cooking and with an extensive range of restaurants with culinary delights from all over the globe, eating out in the evening is a positive joy. The restaurants are well spread around the resort area but if you like fish and a Canarian atmosphere head down to the old harbour and you won’t be disappointed in the slightest.

Lanzarote can be enjoyed as a holiday destination at any time of the year. But some months are better than others with the most unreliable weather usually experienced during February and March, although the climate is still mild even then.
